I went on a long weekend to Amsterdam with some of my friends from work at the end of February. We were really lucky with the weather as we caught the little winter heatwave (global warming damn it) so we did a lot of walking around, sitting and eating in the sun. It was quite a chilled weekend and we didn’t try to pack too much in, but we still managed to see quite a few cool things!
We went to the Moco Museum and looked at the Bansky exhibition which was probably my favourite part of the trip. I loved reading all of the explanations of his art – the meanings of all of his work are so multi-layer and really make you think.
We did a lot of brunching (one of my favourite things to do in the world, ever). We went to a cute place called The Breakfast Club and another place called Bagel & Beans, both of which were yummy. We sat outside and soaked up the morning (or noon) sun sipping on Prosecco and cappuccinos.
We went on a canal cruise which was really good fun but also very informative, as the driver told us lots of nuggets of information as we were sailing along. It was a good opportunity to just sit back and take everything in. The city is so beautiful and also so unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before!
One of my friends, Elle, is on a year abroad in Amsterdam and so I met up with her for dinner and drinks. We went to the Vegan Junk Food Bar in De Pijp which was SO AMAZING. I had loaded fries and she had a ‘chicken’ burger. We talked for hours and hours – we hadn’t seen each other since a friend’s 21st in October so we had a lot to catch up on!
I feel like we absolutely toured the city based on food establishments, and I am in no way complaining. There was so much on offer and, even though the prices were pretty high, the food was so good everywhere.
Side note – not really sure why I’m using Tommy Hilfiger photo frames but I just thought they had a cool vibe which kind of matches the feeling of the trip!
We got really lucky with where we stayed – Volkshotel – as it just had absolutely everything we could ever want. There is a restaurant/bar/club on the 7th floor, a cute café on the ground floor and then even hot tubs on the roof!! We spent a couple evenings relaxing here looking out over the city skyline at sunset, which was absolutely gorgeous.
Look at that view!!!
The trip flew by so quickly but it was great to get away from work for a while and see a new city. I think it’s a very under appreciated place, as people tend to visit just for the red light district or to smoke, and they miss the beautiful sights the place has to offer!
